WHAT IS A PATCH TEST

A patch test is a simple but essential safety check carried out before certain tinting and chemical treatments. It involves applying a small amount of the product we use in your treatment to your skin, so we can check how your body responds before we carry out the full service.

Even if you have had similar treatments elsewhere, or have had the same treatment with us before, reactions can develop at any time. Skin sensitivities can change due to hormones, medication, illness, or simply over time, which is why we require a patch test. If you have had the same treatment with us less than 6 months ago you do not need a patch test, if it is longer than that a new patch test is required.

We take this seriously because we care about you, and because some reactions to tinting products can be severe. A few minutes of preparation can prevent a great deal of discomfort.

WHICH TREATMENT REQUIRES A PATCH TEST?

A patch test is required before the following treatments:

  • Eyebrow Tint

  • Lash Tint

  • Brow Lamination

  • Lash Lift

WHERE IS THE PATCH TEST CARRIED OUT?

Your patch test is applied to the inner crease of your arm.
This area is chosen because the skin there is thin and sensitive, making it effective at revealing any reaction, while being discreet and easy to monitor.

We recommend having the patch test when you have no plans.

NO PATCH TEST = NO TREAMENT

This is a firm policy at Totally Polished and is non-negotiable.
If you have not had a patch test carried out at least 48 hours before your appointment, we will be unable to go ahead with your treatment, and our standard cancellation policy will apply.

We know this can feel like an extra step, but it is in place entirely for your protection and the protection of our therapists, many of whom are independent professionals responsible for their own practice and their clients' safety.

HOW TO BOOK YOUR PATCH TEST

When you book one of the above treatments through Fresha, you will be asked whether you need a patch test.

It is your responsibility to answer this honestly and to get your patch test booked in advance.

We strongly recommend booking your patch test as early as possible, don't leave it until the last minute. While the minimum requirement is 48 hours before your treatment, booking ahead gives you plenty of time to monitor your skin, flag any concerns, and rebook if needed.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER A PATCH TEST

Most clients experience no reaction at all.

However, it is important that you monitor the tested area on your inner arm for the full 48 hours following your patch test.

Watch out for any of the following at the patch test site:

  • Redness or irritation

  • Swelling or puffiness

  • Itching or burning sensation

  • Rash or raised bumps

If you experience any of these symptoms:

  1. Take a clear photo of the affected area

  2. Contact us immediately on 01937 833881 to report your symptoms before your appointment goes ahead

  3. If you experience a severe reaction, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, or eyes, seek urgent medical attention straight away, and let us know afterwards

If no reaction occurs within 48 hours, you are clear to go ahead with your treatment.

ONE MORE THING....

Before your appointment, we also recommend taking a look at our individual treatment pages. Each one includes professional advice specific to that service, including guidance on when to book certain treatments ahead of a big event, so you can plan ahead and get the best possible results.
