THE TRUTH ABOUT E-FILES
What every client should know

When I first entered the nail industry over 15 years ago, electric nail files—commonly called “drills”—had a notorious reputation. Many nail techs feared them, and with good reason: used incorrectly, they can cause damage and discomfort. Stories of thinned, sensitive nails left clients hesitant and skeptical.

My Own Journey with E‑Files

For years, I avoided drills—even though the repetitive hand filing was starting to take its toll. My wrists began aching and even seizing under the strain. Then came lockdown, and with it, a painful realisation: if I didn’t change how I worked, I might have to stop doing nails. That’s when I decided to dive into what I’d avoided: an electric file course.

It turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. Proper training transformed the e‑file from something to fear into a career saver.

With the right knowledge and technique…

  • Hand fatigue disappeared. My hands no longer hurled pain after long days.

  • Services got faster. Appointments moved efficiently—no rushing tools on and off.

  • Client results improved. The prep became precise, and retention rates soared.

My clients noticed too—and they loved the gentle, polished finish they were getting. The drill had finally earned a reputation it deserved: a tool for perfection, not destruction.

Why E-Files have a Bad Name

Lack of training — Many took DIY courses or never received proper instruction, leading to thin, overly buffed nails.

Too high speed — Running an e‑file too fast can burn the nail, creating heat and discomfort.

Wrong bits — Using coarse or damaged bits can scrape and ravage the nail surface.

Heavy hands — Pressing too firmly compounds damage risk.

All of these are easy to fix with proper training and understanding.

Your Top Questions Answered

Will an e‑file damage my nails?

Not when used correctly. Just like any tool, it's all about technique. With trained hands, it becomes precise and safe.

What if I’m worried about damage?

Always communicate with your tech. A qualified technician will ask about your nail health, use gentle pressure, and check that you're comfortable throughout. With my e‑file training, I customise the speed and bit for your nails.

Is filing still necessary by hand?

Absolutely. Good prep is a mix of hand filing for gentle shaping and e‑file for speed and precision. The e‑file isn’t a replacement—it’s a tool that enhances your results.

Is it safe?

Yes—when done with proper training, sanitation, and technique. We switch out or sterilise bits between clients and follow strict hygiene standards.

Why I’m Embracing E‑Files in the Salon

Better client experience: Light, accurate filing without hand fatigue.

Stronger results: Gel and builder overlays are smoother, longer-lasting.
