EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LASH EXTENSIONS

Let’s face it—when it comes to lash extensions, it can feel like a total minefield.

What style should you book?

Will it suit your eye shape?

Are lash extensions even the right treatment for you?

If you’ve found yourself asking these questions, don’t worry—we’ve got you.

In this blog, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about lash extensions so you can make an informed decision before hopping onto the lash bed. Whether you're a lash newbie or considering a switch-up from your current style, here's your ultimate guide.

The Different Styles of Lashes

The world of lashes has exploded over the last few years—there are trends left, right, and centre (spiky sets, wet-look lashes, anime lashes... you name it).

But at Totally Polished, we focus on the three most timeless and versatile styles:

CLASSIC LASHES

The OG lash extension. One single synthetic lash is applied to each natural lash. This style is:

  • Ideal for adding length and definition

  • Perfect for a natural or “mascara” look

  • Great for mature clients or those with finer lashes

You can customise this look with different curls, lengths, and mappings to suit your eye shape. Classic lashes are our most popular choice—and for good reason. You’ll be amazed at how much they lift and enhance the eye area without looking “too much.”

RUSSIAN VOLUME

Russian lashes involve applying a fan (cluster) of ultra-fine lashes to each natural lash. This creates a fuller, fluffier, and often more dramatic effect. Best for:

  • Special occasions

  • Clients who love a bold, glam finish

  • Those with naturally sparse lashes who want to add density

Because of the amount of coverage, these lashes can feel heavier.

HYBRID LASHES

The best of both worlds. A mix of classic and volume lashes gives you:

  • Texture and fullness without the density of full Russians

  • A wispy, feathery finish

  • A more noticeable lash look while still feeling soft and wearable

Hybrid lashes are a go-to for many of our clients because they strike the perfect balance—fuller than classics, but not as bold as Russians.

THE COMMITMENT

Now, let’s talk real talk: lash extensions are not a low-maintenance treatment.

If you’re looking for a “one-and-done” beauty fix, you might want to explore lash lifts instead. But if you're ready to stay committed, the results are so worth it.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Your lashes grow and shed on a natural cycle (around 6–8 weeks).

  • As your lashes shed, your extensions go with them.

  • That’s why infills are required every 2–4 weeks to keep them looking full and fresh.

Your environment, aftercare, and even sleeping habits can impact your retention—so lash extensions do take some looking after. But don’t worry, we’re here to guide you through it.

LASH AFTERCARE

Looking after your lashes is key if you want them to last. Here's our golden aftercare list to keep your lashes looking lush:

  • 💦 Avoid water/steam for the first 24–48 hours

  • 🧴 Use an oil-free cleanser and avoid oil-based skincare/makeup

  • 💤 Sleep on your back or use a lash-friendly pillow

  • ✋ Don’t rub or pull at your lashes (tempting, we know!)

  • 🪮 Brush them daily with a clean lash wand

  • 🚫 No mascara (yes, really!)

  • 📆 Book regular infills to maintain your set

At your appointment, we’ll always walk you through the aftercare and even give you your own lash wand to take home.

Lash extensions are more than just a beauty trend—they’re a confidence boost, a time-saver, and a game-changer for so many of our clients.

Whether you’re going for a subtle enhancement or a show-stopping full set, the right style is out there for you.
